ADAPT Project at the ECTMIH – Strengthening AMR Capacity and Empowering Future Researchers Hamburg, Germany, September/October 2025

We are proud to share that the ADAPT Project was represented by two of our young researchers, Dr. Rea Maja Kobialka and Mr. Prakash Ghosh at the European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH) in Hamburg! 
Our presentation highlighted how ADAPT is advancing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) capacity building and surveillance across partner countries — fostering sustainable systems for data collection, laboratory strengthening, and evidence-based public health action.
A key focus of the project is on training and mentoring the next generation of researchers, ensuring that young scientists are equipped with the skills and knowledge to tackle AMR challenges in their regions and beyond.
We extend our gratitude to all collaborators, partners, and the dedicated early-career researchers whose commitment continues to drive this important work forward.

 

ADAPT at OH&W-2025: Safeguarding Human, Animal & Environmental Health

 

On 15–16 September 2025, the International Conference on One Health and Water (OH&W-2025) gathered 200+ experts in Addis Ababa to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in One Health. Hosted by ACEWM and organized under the NORHED One Health project, the event highlighted Ethiopia’s national commitment to One Health.

ADAPT contributions:

  • Keynote by Dr. Ahmed Abd El Wahed (Univ. of Leipzig, Germany) spotlighted the ADAPT project.

  • PhD student Shemse Sebre presented AMR research on E. coli and Salmonella across human, animal & environmental sources.

  • Prof. Eyasu and Prof. Yimtubezinash moderated sessions and joined the panel on Urbanization and One Health.

 Impact: The conference fostered new partnerships, capacity building, and innovative approaches to tackle global health challenges.

Policy engagement on amr| kampala, uganda| June 2025

 In June 2025, our Principal Investigator for the ADAPT Project, Prof. Damalie Nakanjako had the privilege of being interviewed during a policy engagement meeting organized by the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS).
The session focused on raising awareness of the growing threat of AMR and advocating for behaviour change to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics. 
By connecting research with policy, we aim to support evidence-informed decisions that protect both human and animal health — ensuring antibiotics remain effective for generations to come.
We are grateful to UNAS for providing this platform to strengthen collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and the wider community in the fight against AMR.

World Food savety day| Dakar, Senegal | June 2025

On World Food Safety Day, the ADAPT network was proudly represented at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar by one of our young researchers.
The presentation focused on the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in food systems — a critical challenge for food safety, public health, and sustainable development.
We are proud to see the next generation of scientists leading discussions on how strong surveillance systems can help us better understand, monitor, and respond to AMR across Africa.
Through ADAPT, we continue to build capacity, foster collaboration, and empower young researchers to contribute to a safer and healthier future.

 

10th SYmposium on Antimicrobial Resistance in Animals and the environment| Berlin, Germany | June/July 2025

Exciting News from Berlin! 
The ADAPT project was proudly presented at the ARAE, 10th Symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance in Animals and the Environment in Berlin, where our team from the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) showcased the project in a dedicated poster session.
ADAPT aims to strengthen the integration and analysis of surveillance data across human, animal, and environmental sectors to improve risk assessment and early detection of AMR trends.
The symposium offered a valuable platform to exchange ideas with leading experts and decision-makers committed to tackling AMR through a One Health lens. Thank you to all who stopped by and shared their insights!

Celebrating Young Voices in AMR Research!
We’re proud to share that one of our talented young researchers, Shemse Sebre from the ADAPT Project recently represented our work at the 13th Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Day event in Ethiopia! 🇪🇹
At this important national platform, our researcher showcased the ADAPT Project’s commitment to tackling AMR through data-driven strategies, innovation, and collaboration across sectors. Their presentation highlighted our integrated approach to One Health, surveillance, and community engagement—essential pillars in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
We’re inspired by the passion, professionalism, and perspective this young researcher brought to the event. It’s a reminder that empowering the next generation of scientists is key to building a sustainable, AMR-resilient future.

Successful ADAPT Network Annual Meeting | Kumasi, Ghana | May 2025

We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the ADAPT Network Annual Meeting 2025, held this May in Kumasi, Ghana, and expertly hosted by the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR). This year’s meeting focused on One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), bringing together a diverse group of researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Africa and beyond to advance interdisciplinary strategies and strengthen the One Health framework. Highlights included capacity-building workshops for early-career researchers, dynamic presentations and panel discussions, the sharing of research findings and best practices, meaningful engagement with policymakers, and strategic planning for future collaboration across the network. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, contributors, and the outstanding organizing team—especially KCCR for their exemplary leadership and warm hospitality. Together, we are making tangible progress toward sustainable AMR solutions and more resilient health systems across the continent.

Celebrating Youth Awareness campaign of Antimicrobial Stewardship in Uganda,

November 2024


Medical students at Makerere University, College of Health Sciences are championing the fight against antimicrobial resistance!
During the 2024 AMR Week in Kampala, these future healthcare leaders showcased their innovation and passion by winning an antimicrobial awareness campaign. Their efforts are a shining example of how youth-driven innovation can make a significant impact in promoting Antimicrobial Stewardship.
The event was graced by esteemed leaders, including Professor Damalie Nakanjako, Director of ADAPT, and Dr. Henry Kajumbula, Chair of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee. Key partners such as the Infectious Diseases Institute, Baylor College Uganda, the Parliamentary Antimicrobial Resistance Forum, health workers, and community mobilizers came together to support this incredible initiative.
Let’s celebrate and support the efforts of young innovators as they take up the mantle in creating an AMR-free environment for future generations.

9th Antimicrobial Resistance Conference in uganda, 2024


Excited to have represented the ADAPT Project by Damalie Nakanjako, Makerere University at the 9th Antimicrobial Resistance Conference in Uganda!
The ADAPT Project is dedicated to capacity building for AMR surveillance in Sub-Saharan Africa, empowering communities and health systems to tackle the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
At the conference, we witnessed the power of community engagement firsthand. Messages about AMR were shared through drama and storytelling, proving that creative approaches can inspire action and deepen awareness at the community level. 
A huge thank you to the organizers and all the participants for fostering collaboration in the fight against AMR. Together, we’re building a stronger, more informed response to this global health challenge!

 

 8th World One Health Congress in Kapstadt, South africa 2024


The 8th World One Health Congress took place from September 20 to 23, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa, bringing together over 1,400 participants from 87 countries to address global One Health science and policy. At this prestigious event, we had the opportunity to present the ADAPT project, showcasing its contributions to integrated approaches for tackling challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and pandemic preparedness.

Additionally, we are thrilled to have had the chance to meet and connect with representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). It was a valuable chance to share insights, discuss innovative approaches on AMR surveillance, and explore synergies for advancing One-Health initiatives globally.

 

Strengthening Collaboration to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance in Africa


The ADAPT-Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) team organized an engagement to introduce the ADAPT project, focusing on AMR and AntimicrobialStewardship (AMS). Key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ghana Health Service, African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth), and local health institutions, discussed the importance of collaboration in addressing AMR.

Dr. Yaw Amoako and Dr. Michael Frimpong highlighted the project’s goal to bridge research and policy, build capacity, and develop cost-effective diagnostic tools for AMR surveillance.
We look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to implement innovative solutions for a healthier future.

 

Presentation of the ADAPT project to the German senator and a high-level scientific delegation, Ghana, september 2024

We had the privilege of introducing the ADAPT initiative to the Second Mayor of Hamburg and the Senator for Science, Research, and Equality, Katharina Fegebank, during her recent visit to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR). The delegation also included high-profile members such as Prof. Juergen May, Chair of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM).

Our Ghana team lead, Dr. Michael Frimpong, shared insights into ADAPT’s mission to strengthen capacity for combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) across 7 African countries. A wonderful opportunity to highlight our collaborative efforts and commitment to advancing global health!

This year’s conference provided a valuable opportunity for us to connect with leading experts in global health, disease prevention, and antibiotic resistance. We were excited to share insights from our work across seven African nations and engage in meaningful discussions about advancing One Health research and improving health outcomes.

It was an incredible experience, and we look forward to building on the connections and knowledge gained at the event as we continue our mission to drive sustainable health solutions across Africa!

9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly on 12-29 September 2023, New York

The leaders of ADAPT (Prof. Dr. Damalie Nakanjako and Prof. Dr. Uwe Truyen) and Research Networks for Health Innovations in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISSA) attended the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023, New York.

ADAPT is aligned with 7 SDGs. Profs Truyen and Nakanjako at the Science Summit: the ADAPT One Health network is to build capacity for antimicrobial stewardship in sub-Saharan Africa. Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging global pandemic. The ADAPT network promotes the concept to think globally and act locally, so that no country is left behind since we are not protected from AMR until everyone is protected.
